Boeing's 2026 outlook: the world needs 674,000 new pilots by 2045

Charlie Foxtrot Editorial Team Published 2 min read

Every summer Boeing publishes its Pilot and Technician Outlook, a 20-year forecast of how many people airlines will need to fly and maintain their aircraft. The 2026 edition, released in July 2026, is the most useful single number an aspiring pilot can keep in mind: 674,000 new commercial pilots by 2045.

The headline numbers

  • 674,000 new pilots worldwide from 2026 to 2045
  • 728,000 new maintenance technicians
  • 1.023 million new cabin crew
  • 2.425 million new aviation professionals in total
  • USD 195 billion spent on training and pilot services over the period

Where the demand is

Eurasia needs the most pilots (153,000), followed by China (123,000) and North America (122,000). The Middle East needs 67,000 and Southeast Asia 66,000.

South Asia, the region that includes India, needs 48,000 pilots. That looks modest next to Europe, but the growth rate tells a different story. Boeing forecasts South Asian passenger traffic to grow 6.8% a year and the region's fleet to grow 6.9% a year, the highest fleet growth of any region in the world. Boeing values South Asia's training and pilot services market at USD 15 billion over 20 years.

Why the number keeps rising

Two forces drive pilot demand. The first is growth: more aircraft need more crews. The second is replacement: pilots retire, and in most countries airline pilots on international flights must stop at 65. A forecast that covers 20 years captures almost a full generation of retirements.

What it means if you are starting now

A student who begins DGCA ground classes in 2026 will typically hold a CPL within two to three years and be a first officer soon after. That puts today's beginners right at the start of the forecast window. Demand will not be smooth year to year (hiring has been uneven, and fuel costs rose in 2026), but the long-term direction is clear.

The practical lesson is to prepare well rather than fast. Airlines choose from many applicants in any single year, so a clean first-attempt DGCA record, strong RTR(A) skills and good aptitude scores matter as much as the licence itself.

Frequently asked questions

How many pilots will the world need by 2045?

Boeing's 2026 outlook estimates 674,000 new commercial pilots between 2026 and 2045.

How many pilots does India need?

Boeing does not give a separate India figure. It forecasts 48,000 new pilots for South Asia, which includes India, with the fastest fleet growth of any region. Airbus separately estimates India's pilot requirement will rise to about 35,000 by 2035.

Is it a good time to start pilot training in India?

Long-term demand is strong, but airline hiring rises and falls year to year. Students who clear DGCA papers on the first attempt and prepare for airline aptitude tests are best placed.
