Pilot rest rules: DGCA extends FDTL relaxations to March 2027
Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) set how long pilots may work and how much rest they must get. India's revised FDTL rules, designed to reduce fatigue, have become one of the biggest stories in Indian aviation.
The background
- The first phase of the revised rules took effect around July 2025, including longer mandatory weekly rest.
- The second phase focuses on night operations. It redefines night duty as midnight to 6 am and limits landings in that window.
- In December 2025, IndiGo suffered severe disruption, with more than 5,000 cancellations in a week, linked to rostering under the new norms. In February 2026 reports said IndiGo planned to recruit more than 1,000 pilots across ranks.
The October 2026 decision
On 24 October 2026 the DGCA extended temporary relaxations from 31 October 2026 to 31 March 2027, the third extension. The relaxations allow up to three landings in specific night windows, subject to conditions including rest equal to twice the duty period. The government has said there will be no further exemptions.
Both sides
- Airlines (through the Federation of Indian Airlines) cite high fuel prices, airspace restrictions, longer routes, extra crew costs and a weaker rupee. They estimate the full rules could raise pilot requirements by about 25%.
- Pilots (through the Federation of Indian Pilots) say continued relaxations undermine the safety goals of the rules and have asked for the extensions to be withdrawn.
Why it matters for new pilots
Stricter rest rules mean each aircraft needs more pilots. The airlines' own estimate of a 25% higher pilot requirement is one reason recruitment of first officers is expected to grow once the rules apply in full. It also shows how seriously fatigue management is now taken, a topic covered in Human Performance and in airline interviews.
Frequently asked questions
What is FDTL?
Flight Duty Time Limitations are DGCA rules that cap how long pilots can be on duty and set minimum rest, to prevent fatigue.
When do the new night-duty FDTL rules apply in full?
The DGCA extended the temporary relaxations to 31 March 2027, so full application of the night-duty provisions is expected after that date.
Will FDTL rules create more pilot jobs?
Airlines estimate the full rules could raise their pilot requirement by about 25%, which would increase hiring.
