DGCA sets the first training syllabus for gyroplane pilot licences

Charlie Foxtrot Editorial Team Published 2 min read

Gyroplanes, also called autogyros, look like small helicopters but work differently. Their overhead rotor is not powered; it spins freely in the airflow and provides lift, while a separate propeller pushes the aircraft forward. They are light, relatively simple and can fly slowly, which makes them useful for low-level work.

What the DGCA issued

On 29–30 September 2026 the DGCA notified CAR Section 7, Series B, Part XXI: Ground and Flying Training Syllabus for Issue of Pilot Licence for Gyroplanes. It sets out the ground subjects and flying training a candidate must complete for a DGCA licence in the gyroplane category.

Why now

The DGCA described gyroplanes as a possible "new niche" in civil aviation. Uses it listed include:

  • Joy-rides and air experience flights
  • Agricultural spraying
  • Banner towing
  • Aerial surveys and surveillance

The regulator also noted that training organisations and locally assembled spares and components will be needed for the sector to take off.

Context: India's growing list of licence types

Indian aviation has been adding new categories of flying. Drones led the way with remote pilot certificates and training organisations. Gyroplanes are the next step. For most students, though, the main airline route is unchanged: CPL (aeroplane), then a type rating and a first officer job.

Should you consider it?

For now, gyroplane flying is a small, specialised field and the training ecosystem is still being built. It may suit enthusiasts and operators in tourism or agriculture. If your goal is an airline career, focus on the CPL route, but keep an eye on how this sector develops.

Frequently asked questions

What is a gyroplane?

An aircraft with a freely spinning, unpowered rotor for lift and a separate propeller for thrust.

Can I get a gyroplane pilot licence in India?

The DGCA has now published the training syllabus. Training organisations still need to be set up and approved before training is widely available.
