Airbus 2026 forecast: 42,060 new aircraft, and India's pilot need nearly triples
Aircraft manufacturers forecast demand years ahead because airlines order planes years ahead. Those forecasts are also the best early signal of how many pilots will be needed.
The global picture
Airbus's 2026 Global Market Forecast, covered in August 2026, projects:
- 42,060 new aircraft needed from 2026 to 2045 (slightly lower than last year's 43,420)
- 19,820 of them to replace older aircraft and 22,240 for growth
- 81% single-aisle aircraft such as the A320 family, 19% widebodies
- Passenger traffic growing 3.9% a year, up from 3.6% in the previous forecast, reaching about 10 billion passengers a year by 2045
Airbus names India among the developing economies whose growing middle class will drive this traffic.
India in focus
In January 2026 Airbus published a separate India forecast. Its key figures for 2035:
- India's commercial fleet roughly triples to 2,250 aircraft, making India the third-largest civil aviation market
- Passenger traffic grows 8.9% a year, the fastest among major economies
- The pilot requirement rises to 35,000 from about 12,000 today
- The technical staff requirement rises to 34,000 from about 11,000
- About 50 new airports, taking the national total to roughly 200
Why single-aisle matters to new pilots
Most Indian airline fleets are built around narrowbody jets such as the A320 family and Boeing 737. Most first officer jobs are on these types, which is why cadet programmes end with an A320 or 737 type rating. Airbus expects four out of five new aircraft worldwide to be single-aisle.
Reading forecasts sensibly
A forecast is not a job offer. Airlines hire in waves, and 2026 has brought high fuel prices and airspace restrictions that slowed some plans. But both major manufacturers point in the same direction for India: many more aircraft, and therefore many more pilots, over the next decade.
Frequently asked questions
How many pilots will India need by 2035?
Airbus forecasts India's pilot requirement will rise to about 35,000 by 2035, from about 12,000 in early 2026.
Which aircraft will most new Indian pilots fly?
Mostly single-aisle jets such as the Airbus A320 family and Boeing 737, which make up the bulk of Indian airline fleets.
